Black Rock Arts Foundation and Illuminate The Arts present

The IlluminArts Walk

Language of the Birds sculpture at corner of Columbus & Broadway, San Francisco

Thursday, Dec 5th, 5:30pm-8:30pm

As early winter dusk descends upon our City on December 5th, Black Rock Arts Foundation (BRAF) and Illuminate the Arts invites residents and visitors of San Francisco to don lighted gear and illuminated wearable art, and engage in an evening of participatory pageantry. The IlluminArts Walk is a strolling light installation at the human scale – where participants become art by illuminating their most fun evening finery and walk from North Beach to the Embarcadero. The route explores three works of illuminated art, traverses two neighborhoods, and brings new energy to our sidewalks and Telegraph Hill, all while enjoying gorgeous vistas of The Bay Lights. This event has been created in support of San Francisco Travel’s inaugural “Illuminate SF”, a new seasonal program which offers the entire city of San Francisco as a gallery of light-filled art, illuminating the dark winter evenings.

The evening begins at 5:30pm at the North Beach intersection of Columbus and Broadway at the Language of the Birds sculpture, commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission’s Public Art Program. There, your Walk host, BRAF Executive Director Tomas McCabe, will introduce The IlluminArts Walk participants to site-specific light art creators Brian Goggin and Dorka Keehn who will discuss their art: solar-powered books mimicking birds in flight, created in conjunction with scientist David Shearer and City Lights Books.

The IlluminArts Walk is free and open to the public. Wheeled conveyances will re-join the group at the base of the Filbert Steps on Sansome Street. Participants will use legal pedestrian thoroughfares (sidewalks, crosswalks, stairs) and are encouraged to “illuminate” their clothing, creating a spontaneous collective walking art piece.

Trapeze X 2013 Finale

Rickshaw Stop, 155 Fell @ Van Ness, San Francisco

Friday, Dec 6th, 9pm-2am

Celebrate the winter onslaught with a warm and undulating death ray of old world wonder jacked sky-high on tomorrow’s sonic dope.

San Francisco’s vaunted electro-vintage volcano erupts with circus song and sultry dance forbidden for the faint of heart and the lazy of loin.

Equal parts Weimar cabaret and wild speakeasy rave, Trapeze lures a bevy of underworld flappers, vipers, vamps, and villains to a bass-fueled night of jazz age abandon. Strap us on if you want to live.

Music from Delachaux, The Klown, and The Speakeasy Syndicate

Performers include Vienna La Rogue, Kara La Fleur, Ze Sexbombe Danzeurs, Fou Fou Ha, and Ferocious Femcee Emma Nation and her Band of Boyfriends

Roaring 20's Speakeasy Fundraiser

Emerald Tablet, 80 Fresno St, San Francisco

Saturday, Dec 7th, 7pm-11pm

https://www.facebook.com/events/226762480825972/

Our Roaring 20’s Speakeasy will take you back to the glamour and illicit fun of the prohibition era for one night in the illustrious North Beach district. Performances ranging from belly dancing, gypsy music, a vinyl spinning DJ, and improv acting will set the mood and entertain you throughout the evening. And of course, no speakeasy is complete without the booze! (We will also have non-alcoholic drinks available, and food to entice your taste as well.)

The fun you have this delightful evening will benefit Free the Need, a grassroots all-volunteer non-profit, who has been feeding and clothing needy families in the Bay Area since 1989. Since then, we have given out produce every Friday, serving thousands of families every year. Now we are looking to expand our program by buying a warehouse, where we could store the food, clothing, and household items donated to us and make it more readily available to those we serve. This party will kick off our fundraising campaign to reach our goal.

Benezra Tergis will be DJing the event, and his brother Lars Tergis and his band will be playing some Balkan tunes for the lovely Elana Brutman to belly dance to. Deborah Eliezer and actors from her theater troupe Fools Fury will also be improv acting as characters from the period throughout the evening. We will also have a number of surprise performances happening, for which you will have to come to find out!

A word from a ninja: Pirates are loud, undisciplined, disease infested, dirty, mangy, crude and rude. It is impossible to think they would ever be better at killing than me or any of my ninja breatheren. I dare any amount of Pirates to attack me so that I may silently kill you and whisper away into the night to meditate on your death.

A word from a pirate: Arrrrrgh you kidding me? Silently kill me? discipline? arrrgh... cleanliness? you m'igh think you are better at killing and we'll debate that over mead any ole day, but we both know, Pirates are better at living! Arrrrgh, we do pilliage and rob and drink and drunk and i dont bathe unless i trip and fall into the water, and what a life to live!

World without End

Redux Studio & Gallery, 2315 Lincoln Ave, Alameda

Friday, Dec 13th, 6pm-11pm

Bunnie Reiss, the 2013 SVdP Artist in Residence, invites you to a 'World Without End,' an immersive fabric and painting installation inspired by her recent travels to India.

Take my hand as we scale along the shadows. We are going to the place where life and death are standing tall together, embracing, sighing, laughing…in the muck that is the world, we see this tiny crack in the dirty sidewalk. We trust each other, as we sit comfortably like old friends laughing without a care in the world. There, ahead of us, is our world, going on forever and ever, changing shape and moving at a speed that only children understand. I never told you how much you mean to me…but here is my offering. Here are my tears, my love, all for you. I do not need anything in return except the reassurance that I am you and you are me, and forever we will live in a world without end.
